The codename is borrowed from SpaceX. Before Starship had its current name, the rocket was internally called BFR.
The B stands for Big.
The R stands for Rocket.
The F is officially Falcon. Unofficially, the engineering team had a more colorful interpretation that has been winked at for years. We will let your imagination handle the rest.
The "Booster" part is more literal. A booster does not look like much from the outside, but it is what gets the rocket off the ground. v5 is the booster for everything coming next.
A month ago we shipped v4. That release was visible the second you opened the app: full redesign, UI and UX improvements, AI Plan, deeper personalization.
v5 is the opposite. Almost nothing visual changes.
We migrated the entire backend off our previous foundation and onto an enterprise database. Every piece of data was re-modelled and moved over: tables, tasks, comments, notes, AI artifacts, the sharing model.
It is the most important release we have ever shipped, and you can barely see it.
Open a shared table on two devices. Type on one, watch the other update live. Comments, notes, task status, AI replies - all of it.
Whether you have 50 tables or 5000, opening a week or month view feels the same. The app does not slow down as your data grows.
The app loads from local cache before the network answers. No internet? Your changes are written locally and sync to the cloud the moment you are back online.
Same speed from Europe, the US, Asia, South America. No more "the app feels slow today" days depending on where you are.
Built to handle whatever growth comes next. The sky is the limit.
The next wave of SelfManager.ai features needs richer data, deeper relationships between objects, and more flexibility than the old backend allowed. v5 makes all of it possible without rewriting the foundation again.
Google has been our platform since 2016, when the first line of SelfManager.ai was written. Using the best available tech has been a founding principle from day one. v5 brings the codebase fully optimized and up to date with the current generation.
v5 is the foundation that makes the next generation of SelfManager.ai features possible.
It unlocks more complex data sharing, finer-grained security, granular operations across tables and dates, and the next wave of integrations. It also makes possible what we are most excited about: Jarvis, our upcoming AI chat and voice assistant - a real partner that knows your tables, your history, and your plans.
Features that took two weeks now take a few days.
The data model was a bottleneck on some roadmap item. Not anymore.
The next year of features assumes this migration. Bulk operations, real templates, public APIs, cross-table reporting, deeper AI features that need richer data - all constrained on the old backend. All unblocked now.
We need that speed. Tech and AI are moving at rocket pace, and v5 is our booster.
Migrations are not glamorous. No screenshots. No flashy demo. There is no way to show off a database rewrite that does not involve graphs only engineers care about.
But this one was harder than the redesign. And it is the release that makes everything coming next possible.
v4 made the app feel new, and BFR Booster makes it possible to keep making it better and serve more people at a higher standard.
Just watch what comes next.
